How to Get your Macbook to stream to your PS3.

Since it's kinda crappy out today Scott and I decided to watch a movie. Of course this opened up a can of worms: We wanted to be able to watch the movies that we've downloaded (since downloading isn't illegal in Canada- as long as it's for personal use! Therefore: no opening a movie theatre!) on our new HDTV via our PS3. Now this is where the can of worms comes in: Not only did we want to watch them from my external drive, which hooks up to the PS3 by USB cable, but we wanted to stream from our respective computers: me from my Macbook and he from his desktop PC in the Den. WELL his desktop was easy enough- the PS3 recognized it right away and we could stream movies from there without a problem. My Macbook was a whole other set of worms...the PS3 didn't want to recognize it at all. So I set out to find a solution, and I found it in a free program called: PS3 Media Server (how very fitting!).

Basicall you just download this program, install it into your Applications folder, and then set up which folders you'd like to "share" to your PS3. I for instance, wanted my movies, music, and photos to be viewable- so I added those folders under the share tab. The one stipulation is that this program has to be running in order to get the movies off your hard drive. I don't mind this one little bit because I'd like to know when people are streaming movies off my harddrive. And it's free- so no complaining here.

It's not beautiful, but it's easy and free. And now I can watch the Sound of Music whenever I want without reconnecting anything.
