My friends Claire and Jenn from the good ol' days of OYP have started a project called Note to Self. The idea being that you write your younger self a short note relaying important information. Something that you know had you received it at that time might have made a big difference.
The whole thing has got me thinking. What would I have told myself in highschool? Elementary school? What simple words from the future would have had a profound impact on my life?
As a child I was unbelieveably insecure. Growing up in a very closed small community in Elementary school I think I could have used some words of encouragement: The boys you're stuck with now won't matter in just a few short years. Ask Mommy to enroll you in drama classes now.
In highschool I could have used a good verbal smack: What you're going through now will prepare you for what lies ahead. Don't focus on what Mom and Dad want for you- focus on what you want for yourself, what YOU know you're good at. Boys aren't worth it. You're stronger than you think. Working is important but the memories you'll make when you take off work are what you'll remember.
Even now I know what I need to tell myself: Do what feels right, yes, they'll be angry but they'll get over it. Take a chance. Everything will work out.
I think that's the essence of it all: If you try your best, and don't do anything rash or unbeleiveably stupid, IT WILL ALL WORK ITSELF OUT! I stress myself out about details that in the long run are meaningless. It's important to recognise what is life changing and what seems life changing but will be soon forgotten.
So that's my new mantra: It will work itself out. No more trying to please everyone...it'll work out.
